The University of Alabama-Birmingham Fredrick E. Levin College of Law is actually the only law school located on the UAB campus. Founded in 1908, it is still the second oldest operating public university in Alabama and third oldest overall in the state of Alabama. In addition to housing the Fredrick E. Levin Center for Public Service and the Center for Law and Justice, which is affiliated with UAB, the school also houses several different law libraries.
Law school students will find that they have a lot of options available to them when it comes to their education. They have a wide range of program options to choose from, including associate degrees, bachelors, master’s and doctoral programs. However, students will typically be grouped into one of three types of degree programs: clinical, liberal arts and sciences. Each school offers different types of clinical programs, which may include clinical studies in legal areas such as immigration law and family law. Additionally, students will typically select an elective or special course in their first two years of study, depending upon what type of law they want to pursue and where they wish to go after completing their undergraduate degree program.
The Law School Admission Test (LSAT), or Law School Admission Test, is one of the most common requirements to attend law schools. This exam is a prerequisite to all forms of admission to the University, including law schools, including the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Military Academy at Annapolis and the U.S. Air Force Academy at Lackland. Students must pass the LSAT exam if they are serious about pursuing law degrees and becoming licensed lawyers. In addition to the LSAT, students should also take introductory courses in law and legal terminology, so that they can properly prepare for the actual test. Courses in these fields can be taken in an online or in-class format, depending upon the student’s preferences.
Students who choose to get a law degree online will usually have to fulfill some academic requirements, but are not required to take a law-specific course. Some of the classes a student should take prior to entering law school include Introduction to Law and Legal Writing, Principles, Introduction to Probate Processes and Procedure, Legal Research Methods, Introduction to Civil Procedure and Introduction to Criminal Procedure. Other courses that may be offered to those who choose to complete their undergraduate degree program online include Comparative Litigation, Principles and Practice, Intellectual Property Law, Civil Procedure, Corporate Litigation, Commercial Litigation and Corporate Law. In addition to the courses listed above, students may also be required to complete a seminar in ethics.
Students who choose to attend law schools that offer an online bachelor’s degree program will be able to fulfill the requirements to earn the degree through distance learning at a time and pace that works well with their schedules. Students will not have to give up their day jobs, and can pursue a degree at their own pace. For those students who would like to pursue a master’s degree, a student must still complete the requirements and pass the LSAT, but they do not have to have an undergraduate degree in order to enroll in a program. A master’s degree is an advanced degree that generally require more time and effort to earn than a bachelor’s degree, but it allows more flexibility for students to choose a specific field of study, complete a more in-depth curriculum, work towards a particular specialization and be supervised by a faculty member.
Students interested in pursuing the Bachelor of Science degree program in Law are able to enroll online to complete a bachelor’s degree in Science in Law and Public Policy (LPS). It is an intensive program that allows students to study within a nationally recognized university or college and earn a Master’s degree, not just the Associate’s degree they would earn with an online law program. With the LPS degree, students are able to complete the courses necessary to earn a Bachelor of Science in Law from an accredited institution that offers an Associate’s degree program. The LPS degree is typically an interdisciplinary program, which allows students to complete courses in the field they want to specialize in while earning the associate degree required for their chosen career path.
Students who choose to pursue a Bachelors of Science in Law and Policy will be required to complete courses that will prepare them to enter the field of law as a legal assistant or a legal research assistant. The Bachelors of Science in Law and Policy can be completed in an in-class or an online environment. A student must pass the entrance exam, take an exam in his or her chosen field of study and pass the LSAT in order to earn the degree. A student must then pass the clinical test, the final exam, take an oral board exam, pass the written exam and then have at least two years of relevant experience in law, pass a qualifying exam and be licensed to practice law before they can take the bar examination.
